Why is Authentication Necessary?

A Las Vegas marriage certificate cannot be used directly in China because local Chinese authorities cannot verify its authenticity. Therefore, it must undergo notarization and consular authentication both locally abroad and at the Chinese embassy or consulate. This process, commonly known as "three-level authentication," must be completed through the Chinese consulate. Only after the marriage certificate has undergone consular three-level authentication can it be used in China to handle relevant domestic marriage procedures.

How to Apply?

• Register at the Clark County Marriage Bureau to obtain a marriage license.
• Obtain the marriage license: Note that a marriage license does not mean you are legally married; it only registers your intent to marry.
  You must also hold a wedding ceremony and obtain a certified copy of the marriage certificate issued by the Clark County Clerk to be considered legally married.

Notarization and Authentication Process

After obtaining the county marriage certificate, proceed with authentication at the Secretary of State (State level), followed by authentication at the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco. Since Nevada falls under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, authentication can only be done there.

Common Mistakes in Secretary of State Authentication

The most common mistake in Secretary of State authentication is using an Apostille instead of a Certificate of Authentication. For marriage certificates to be used in China, a Certificate of Authentication is required, not an Apostille!

Recommendations and Fees

If you have a marriage certificate, you must check whether there is a Clark County seal in the upper left corner. If present, it can be processed normally by the Secretary of State. The Secretary of State authentication fee is $75.00 USD. Since the Las Vegas Secretary of State office only accepts expedited processing, you must pay an additional $20.00 USD expedited fee (for next-day pickup), bringing the total to $95.00 USD. Same-day expedited service incurs a higher fee.
