US Notarization and Authentication 2024-01-04

Important Points to Note for Authenticating Taiwan Passports at Chinese Consulates!

If you hold a Taiwanese passport, or if either spouse holds a Taiwanese passport, you must provide your Taiwan Compatriot Permit when applying for personal or company authentication at the Chinese consulate. If you also hold a U.S. passport, we recommend using the U.S. passport for your application.

Marriage Certificate Issues

If either spouse holds a Taiwanese passport, some U.S. states require you to fill in your place of birth when applying for a marriage certificate. If you only write "TAIWAN," complications may arise when you need to authenticate the marriage certificate at the Chinese consulate. The consulate will require you to amend the certificate so that "TAIWAN" is followed by "CHINA," resulting in "TAIWAN, CHINA." Without this, the consulate will not accept the document for authentication.

Birth Certificate Issues

When a child is born, some U.S. states require parents to fill in their place of birth or address. If either parent was born in Taiwan or holds a Taiwanese passport, special attention is needed. If the birth certificate only states "TAIWAN" without adding "CHINA," the Chinese consulate will not accept it for authentication.

Consulate Authentication Application Form Issues

If you were born in Taiwan, such as in Taipei City, please write "Taipei City, Taiwan, China" (or "TAIPEI, TAIWAN, CHINA"). If your family members are Taiwanese compatriots, the nationality field must still be filled in as "China," "TAIWAN, CHINA," or "CHINA" to avoid visa rejection.

Processing Principles

The Chinese government and its consulates abroad adhere to the principle that Taiwan is an "inalienable part of China's sacred territory" and uphold the One-China principle. Therefore, all original U.S. documents and related application materials must reflect Taiwan's affiliation with China.
