Overview of Notarization and Authentication Procedures

Any personal or company documents from the United States intended for use in Vietnam must undergo embassy legalization and authentication. Prior to submission to the Vietnamese Embassy, the documents must first be notarized and authenticated by the Secretary of State. Generally, there are two types of authentication from the U.S. Secretary of State: Apostille and Certificate of Authentication. If the documents are for use in Vietnam, please ensure you select Authentication, as the Vietnamese Embassy does not accept Apostille (Hague Authentication). Once the Authentication is completed, the documents can be submitted to the Vietnamese Embassy. If you are submitting to the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington, D.C., you must also complete authentication by the U.S. Department of State.

Estimated processing time for the Vietnamese Embassy in the United States:

Regular: 5–7 business days;
Expedited: 2–3 business days
