What Is an Apostille
An Apostille is a form of international document authentication under the Hague Convention. Documents with an Apostille can be used directly in any Hague Convention member country without additional consular legalization.
Two Pathways
Pathway 1: Secretary of State
- For state-level documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, etc.)
- Processing time: typically 1-10 business days; expedited service available
- Procedures and fees vary slightly by state
Pathway 2: US Department of State
- For federal documents (FBI background checks, etc.)
- Processing time: approximately 4-11 weeks
- Mail-in only

- Marriage certificates and divorce decrees
- Diplomas and degree certificates
